Farm Fun: We like to grow this squash as a ground cover in our heavily mulched orchards. It is a great way to harvest fruit from above and squash on the ground. Having ground cover is simple and can improve soil health in a variety of ways. Ground cover reduces the impact of heavy rains and allows that rain to soak in the soil more efficiently. The large leaves of the squash shade the soil from the sun reducing evaporation and providing ideal environment for soil microbes the thrive. Ground cover can suppress unwanted weeds and prevent erosion.
